The everyday

The everyday
07/01/24
Today I joined the 1st and 2nd years on a trip back to Nottingham Castle. The trip was mainly aimed at their external brief they’re doing at the castle, It’s optional for us but I think I’ll do it, why not? It’s a good opportunity and a nice venue. I’ll tie it in with my current project, respond to the bathrooms. However today I went to the castle purely to see the new exhibit, nothing to do with that project. In the new exhibit they have 4 pieces by Wolfgang Tillman's. The work of Tillman's has been a huge influence on my work and practice. I remember last year Tom showed us an example of his work on one of his slides, I don’t remember the topic of the talk or slide show but I remember our discussions. I liked the piece, I think it was orange peel, something in the foreground was out of focus. Someone really didn’t like it, mentioned how they thought the subject was just rubbish for the bin and her child could have taken on her phone, or something like that. Tom talked about the skill of the photo, how to replicate real feelings. I instantly just thought, yes.

I did go on to look into Tillman's more for previous projects. I was new to photography when seeing his work and it has definitely had an impact on my style. I often chose alternate compositions, not quite centred. I like different light and shadow, but not to dramatic, I think this was partly adopted from his work. His work wasn’t only influential in a photography style but also my practice as a whole, I think through a way of seeing. I often describe my practice as a reflection of the human condition. My focus and practice is often a reflection on my own world and everyday, the influence of his work has changed my perception and added importance to mundane moments.
