Debbie Bryan
On Thursday I took a trip to the Debbie Bryan shop and studio in St Mary’s gate, in the lace market. Debbie Bryan’s is lucky enough to have their own personal Nottingham lace archive, housing vintage technical drawings, embroidery samples, Jacquard punch cards. These pieces were salvaged from Fewkes lace embroidery company in its closing. This was the last real Nottingham lace manufacturer. They made lace for royalty, most notably they made fabric for Princess Diana’s wedding dress. In 2014 Debbie Bryan also gained cyanotype prints of lace for their archives from the 20th century and have also explored with the technique themselves. They also house a few more modern pieces of lace work within their studio as they work closely with the cluny lace factory, a lace production factory in Nottinghamshire that still uses the traditional Nottingham leaver machines, Debbie Bryan’s uses there lace to creates art pieces to sell within their shop. Another more modern approach they have taken is a range of pottery they have created in collaboration with Duchess china 1888 and Heraldic pottery where they have created really beautiful lace inspired ceramics finished with 18 Caret gold. The whole experience was very inspiring for my “lace legacy” project and my favourite part about it all was that there were a few pieces of the original vintage Nottingham lace that you were able to touch, which is a rare experience.
