Research
Photography task
I was asked to research 2 different images of my choice, one conceptual photography piece and one functional photography piece. For my functional photography task I have decided to look at the piece, The terror of war by Nick Ut.
Nick Ut was a war photographer and photojournalist working on the ground during the Vietnam war. On the 8th June 1972, Ut was working during an accidental napalm dropping that left these children pictured running for their lives. The girl in the centre was screaming as she’d ripped of her burning clothes that had scorched 65% of her body. This picture really depicts the raw fear and horrors of war as it shows these innocent children suffering through something so horrific and no fault of there own. This photo had a huge impact as the death or pain of children is something everyone can sympathise and feel anger towards no matter race, religion or country. This photo was created to really show the public and outer world what what really happening, a photo for a news outlet. It is definitely a functional piece of photography and Nick Ut said himself “The horror of the Vietnam war recorded by me did not have to be fixed.” This isn’t a piece of photography I’d say I like but i can definitely appreciate its importance. The horrifying nature of the photo makes it so moving to see as an on looker and too some it may be something they can not stomach to see, but It’s something that can’t be overlooked no matter how upsetting to see, it was so important for Ut to show the world these atrocities so they are not repeated.
