Research
Photography task
I was asked to research two pieces of photography of my choice , one functional piece of photography and one conceptual piece of photography. For my conceptual piece of photography I have chosen to look at the sunlight collection by Sian Davey, particularly the image below.
This collection was created to portray the grief and vulnerability of death with these photos being taken a month before her farther died of cancer. I find this image in particularly powerful, the posing of these simple objects projects such huge emotion. This is just a photo of a hospital table with a man’s things on but the way she has positioned these objects, the lighting, the decision to leave in the half drank cups, the medications, his belongings like his glasses and razor, such personal things this is a photo of the man’s life on a tray, everything he needed to get by. Thats what makes it so powerful how she’s taken these objects and projected a whole story onto the on looker, a feeling of familiarity but also melancholia. I personally found this collection of photographs so moving. I recently lost my own farther to the same battle and these photos really depict the emotions felt through such a horrid time. Davey’ photos and the use of viewpoint depict so simply yet accurately the hospital process, the process of watching a loved one grow sicker before your eyes, the vulnerability that takes over them, the grief before the death.
