Nicolette Johnson
Nicolette Johnson is a ceramic artist who was born in London in 1990, she grew up in Texas, USA and currently lives and works in Brisbane, Australia. Johnson creates various types of vessels that explore natural symmetry, surrealism and botanicals. Her usually quite large scale pots and vases are created through various different hand built techniques from coiling to throwing. The inspiration for these pots comes through so clearly, these quite traditionally shaped vessels get adorned with various textures that reflect nature, like the pot "space flower" being decorated with these perfectly symmetrical protrusions, then fired with quite natural glazing color choices like the charcoal color of this piece.

I really enjoy this artist and the themes she explores as i find her work very intriguing, when looking at the pieces initially there mysterious, they want you to look at them closely, pull you in, inspect the many coves of the surface texture, but the more i did look at these pieces the more they disturbed me, the symmetry of them is unsettling, an alien quality of something so perfect yet mysterious casting an ore of uncertainty upon the onlooker. Looking at these pieces is how i imagine Trypophobia to feel. This piece also really gives me the feel of ferrofluid ,the black liquid magnet, these piece have a huge dark mystical feel to them like something from a science fiction movie. This artists exploration of textures on smooth traditional vessels is a perfect inspiration and researching point for my own project of exploring natural textures in a slightly different manner.
