Artist Research

 Brian Rochefort

Brian Rochefort is another artist exploring natural textures through the medium of clay and experiments with glaze. He creates large scale abstract vessels and decorates them with layer upon layers of different gloopy glazes and melted glass to create a variety of strange and wacky textures. Rocheforts natural inspiration comes from places hes seen first hand whilst travelling, places like volcanos, craters, coral reefs and other naturally powerful environment's. To create these wonderful magma like textures each piece is glazed and fired a multitude of times to create these shocking colors, crackled and smooth textures. I'm a huge fan of this abstract sculptor, i love his use of these bright colors in relation to the natural, showing the pure whimsy in his way of seeing thing. I love the sense of unpredictability that these sculptors portray, it gives a real sense of these natural places he draws inspiration from they themselves are huge places of unpredictability in nature, the eruptions of volcanos and vast colors in coral that just appear and the beautiful destruction they can cause. To me these pieces give me ideas of compacted cars and rubbish in rubbish dumps, the bright colors of plastic wrappers and metallic car paints, again that idea of beautiful destruction. I really like this artist and his works themes as it gives me a whole new view and ideas of textures in nature, the bright colorful side opposed to the purely natural color scheme i have been working with.
