Research
Consumerism task
After our recent consumerism talk we were asked to research two different art pieces dealing with the idea of consumerism and discuss them.
The first piece of work I’ve decided to look at is The art of consumerism by Gabriel Kuri. These are large scale tapestries of sales receipts, I’m looking at the below receipt piece in particular. I really like this piece as its large size is really striking, paired with the subject matter of receipts it’s gives a really home hitting message of the waste made by consumerism. This piece is a receipt strip for things of not much monetary value like $10 and $2 really bringing forth that question of do we really need these non recyclable pieces of paper we typically just throw. Also that fact that the artist has made this large scale piece a tapestry is a really interesting choice, it’s something that lasts a long time like these plastic coated paper receipts, I like this because it really brings that message through again with such a small design choice . I’m also a huge fan of how Kuri has displayed this piece, leaving the roll of fabric slightly draping at the bottom, to me it really gives life to this piece making it from just a tapestry to almost an actual receipt. This piece is interesting because it brings this message of the environmental impact made by consumerism in a very subtle but hard hitting way due to the simple but effective choices like the drastic size, medium and messages on the work.
