studio practice
Now I had an idea I was confident with it was time to buy the supplies I needed and get started on the final paintings. I knew I wanted to paint large but i haven't previously worked in a size larger than A1 so i decided to stay within my comfort zone and planned to create three A1 paintings in the colour schemes of the experiments to be displayed as a set instead of a larger size. I talked my idea out with others, brought my canvas's and got an early train home from the studio to catch a shadow I had scouted out a few days earlier. I chose the subject of windowsill shadows, I found them fascinating as to me the windowsill tells quite a narrative about a person, its a mix of what they want to display to others mixed with the personal aspect of the mess and convenience of everyday life, then when all this is projected in a grey silhouette of a shadow the narrative becomes much more ambiguous, it becomes merely an idea or hint of a life/person that can be interpreted differently depending whose looking at them and the back knowledge they know.
So I took my canvas home early and played around moving the canvas under the shadow to find the composition I wanted. When it came to the composition i was conflicted, personally i preferred how the canvas looked landscape although i did decide on the portrait composition as i knew it would ultimately look better and more uniformed when displayed with others. I captured this shadow at 4.53pm and had to work very quickly to get the correct outlines down before the light moved and distorted the shadow. I quickly found out i had to get all out lines down in light paint as pencil marks or even normal brushstrokes against the fabric of the canvas slightly moved the lines out of place. so to solve this issue i mixed up a thin watery paint mixture to get the lines and underpainting down ready to take it back into the studio and get painting properly. I decided to go with the colour scheme from the first experiment, the blue and orange board but I wanted to try and brighten the colours up more and this led me to adding in yellow.
