Shadow painting 1 process
I mixed up two separate palettes of paint one in blue and one in yellow so I had plenty of different transitional shades to work with. I got started by placing down the darkest blues in the space of the main silhouette, then adding a much lighter blue around the edges where the lightest grey tones would be in the shadows then the bright yellows where the light hits. At this point the painting was looking rather graphic in style rather than expressive like I wanted but at this stage it was ok as I just needed to get the main colours down then work from there.
Over the next few days i worked back into this kind of base coat with these different shades, mixing harsh brushstrokes with loose expressive lines and drips, building texture and colour. I wanted to keep the main tones in this painting very vibrant but quickly found that where the darkest yellow/orange tones meet the lightest blue tones I had to add a layer of white in between to stop the shades turning green due to the opaqueness of some of the paints. I really liked how my painting was looking at this point and decided to leave it for now to start the next one.
