Shadow Painting 3
After the whole sanding process and rip in the canvas I decided to just create two more windowsill paintings but this time leave them without any layering and just as paintings. Although I’ve kind of axed the first two paintings I’ve decided to continue on with the journey of windowsill shadows throughout my home. I’d spotted this window shadow in my hallway a few days earlier, however as the hallway window is on the opposite side of the house to the past two windows I’ve used it meant that the shadow is cast in the early morning opposed to late evening, meaning I had to set an alarm to wake up as this shadow was captured at 6.16am. So I got up early and completed the under painting so I was ready to take the canvas into the studio that day and get working on it. I went for a green colour scheme for this one, changing it up slightly from the tones of the experiment board, adding in much darker greens and yellows. I basically went through the same process as my other paintings, placing down the darkest tones and shapes first working up to the lightest. My painting got to one point and it felt to roughed rather than expressive and I couldn’t decide wether it was the dramatic change in colour tones or the very straight marks so I decided to white wash over the whole thing. I used a thin mixture of lots of water mixed with white acrylic paint this gave me the coverage to lighten the colours and change marks whist still being able to trace the original shadow properly. After this I tried to be much more expressive in my mark making letting the paint go where it wanted to go and think more about how the green tones would interact with the yellows. I let the painting get to a place I was happy with and then let it be for a while to start the next one. For last parts of the paintings I worked in on both at the same time, this started by working on the lightest parts or the yellow on both to make sure the tones were exactly the same and then I found it a good method so carried on with it when adding the neon tones despite them being different colours. After this i got to a place where i thought i was happy with both paintings, finishing them at around the same time.
