Sarah Lucas sculpture and photography
Sarah Lucas is British artist whose work spreads through a range of medias, though ill be looking particularly at her sculptures and photography. Lucas's soft sculptures emulate the female form usually through stuffed tights. She creates the idea of women's bodies through stuffed hosiery displayed in human like positions, all of these pieces devoid of hands, heads, feet yet they still imitate the female through the material and arrangement. A rebellious feminist attitude is present throughout Lucas's whole body of work, usually paired with childish crude humour. I personally really love Lucas's work, the childish humour is really effective, its something that resonates with everyone at some level. When creating my own soft sculptures her simple humour is something I've been trying to achieve just in a slightly different way, I also found the more I got into this project that some of these feminist messages were applicable to my own work, so I did push it forward in my own way but kept looking back to Lucas as part of the original inspiration.
I've also found myself looking back at Lucas's work when thinking about photographing and presenting my sculptures. Her photography is raw and casual in style, quite often black and white or subdued in colour, there's clearly thought behind the placement in each photo but they still feel unposed and raw. This is the type of style and composition I think I want to try out when photographing my own work.
