The ordinary talk
After our talk on the ordinary we've been asked to find two examples of artists who either make work with or about ordinary things. The second piece of work I’ll be discussing is photographs by Richard Billingham.
Richard Billingham is an English Photographer and Filmmaker, his work now tends to focus on landscapes but ill be looking at his photographs of his family. Billingham grew up in the West Midlands, Growing up in a lower working class family. His family life had everyday difficulties, having not the healthiest of parents, his farther an alcoholic. This family life became the focus for his photography, capturing raw unfiltered moments. Family issues are usually something that a person tries not to broadcast and perhaps shy's away from showing others for fear of judgement, but these images rebel against this idea. These images showed his "normal" ordinary life, and normal varies for a lot of people, most now have this quite pristine, ordered idea of normal but for many normal has its flaws and difficulties, it isn't always pretty but its still valid to be seen. I really like these image, I like how they show the ordinary no matter how un pretty.
