Abstraction and process art talk
After our talk on abstraction and process art we were asked to find two pieces of work exploring process or abstraction and discuss. When looking at process art I've decided to research Roman Singer.
Roman Singer is a Swiss artist working in a range of medias, I'm particularly interested in his installations and performative videos, Singer describes these pieces as Action sculptures. Singers process is one of exploration and curiosity, his pieces tend to consist of a set up he designs, where he will preform a simple action that usually results in deconstruction. His pieces closely explore the relationship between cause and effect, the cause usually an action like the pushing of an object or a button, and the effect usually demolition in nature like explosions or deconstruction of scenes. Most pieces are documented in video or photos, they have a clean cut science experiment feeling to them. Despite the clean scientific feeling to his pieces i believe there's also a huge sense of humour, the mix between the cold regimented way of performing actions and the disorder created from it generates a slap stick comedic experience for the viewer.
I believe Roman Singer to be a completely appropriate artist when discussing process art as yes his work is exploring this idea of cause and effect but the way he records and documents the work focuses on the process of the actions rather than just the result, he's interested in showing the process of how these two factors interact with each other and the result caused by it.
