Professional practice

Rachel Carter

Rachel Carter is a sculptor working both in commercial and public sculpture. She works with traditional techniques and ideas like weaving, knots and crochet to create large bronze cast sculptures. During our talk with Rachel Carter she spoke about the steps she took to get her work where it is now and some of the difficulties she faced and how she overcame them. Rachel Carter is a full time artist and still creates cast woven sculptures but now also has current projects being focused around public sculpture, heritage and connecting with communities.

I was inspired to try and learn some of the techniques she had mentioned. Her earlier work was focused around weaving willow in sculptural balls, shapes and forms, this still being a technique she uses in the early stages of some of her current work. I never would of thought to make the coat hangers out of willow if it wasn't for her talk, I even used some of the information on her website to help  me learn. I really enjoyed working with the willow and now know to keep an open mind about other materials.
