Sophie Calle
Take care of yourself, 2007
Over the past two years and my various projects Sophie Calle's work arises in each as some sort of inspiration or influence. Once again I felt it pertinent to mention her influence in both the mirror piece I'm creating and my exploration of apology flowers.
The piece I had been looking at was Take care of yourself, 2007. In this piece Calle had been broken up with via email, the last line being "Take care of yourself", not knowing how to take this, Calle sent this email to 107 different women from completely different backgrounds asking them to analyse it and respond. As all the women came from different fields she received various different responses, artistic performances, dances, writings. These responses became the piece.
Within my artist statement for my apology flowers piece I describe that "The project ultimately aims to explore the disjunction between the intent of an offering and its reception, both personally and within broader human experience." I believe this approach to exploring certain topics is directly influenced by Calle, I didn't know how to take the consistent offering of apology flowers from a parent, much like she didn't know how to take the letter from her ex partner, both turning this outward to explore how others perceive such offerings. Like previous projects I belive the influence of Calle can also be seen in my use of text within my work, text adopted from personal interactions, this can be seen both through the use of text in my publications and the mirror writing pieces.
