Street paste up
Before attempting my own paste up piece I had a look through previous pieces I had seen as well as taking a walk round the city to try find current examples. The idea to try out the paste up idea was suggested to me as a way of printing large on a budget. After this was suggested it reminded me of the street art and paste up culture I saw in Berlin. Paste up culture in itself is a way of creating and sharing art on a budget. Having work in public spaces can be a difficult thing to navigate as an artist, this often consists of many different possible aspects like permissions needed, usually a type of commission, upkeep etc. Creating paste up art is a way of having there work in public and urban spaces without having to deal with these issues, its relatively quick and cheap to produce, meaning the upkeep isn't a problem. In most places it isn't particularly allowed but its a type of street art so permission doesn't tend to be a factor. In all the paste up pieces I have seen both previously in Exhibitions, Berlin, and on my recent walk round the city I noticed running themes in the pieces, either emotive/political pieces or promotional pieces for protests and events.
Looking over these examples of paste up pieces its made me belive I'm making the right choice in using this method as part of my final piece. It was of course suggested to me as a way of printing large cheaply but I think this method also speaks of other themes within my work, within all street art there's a sense of rebellion/rejection of norm. Part of this work is about the rejection of accepting flowers as a means of apology, so using this method to paste up an image of flowers received in such a matter feels fitting. If i were to spend a lot presenting the image in a clean traditional manner it would feel wrong, like a glorification of the very idea I'm rejecting.
