Studio practice

 Mirror piece

So my FMP focuses on the idea of apology flowers and lies, this will be shown in our studio. I do also have a piece in the Nottingham castle show, this piece originated in my shit stories project and will consist of a feminist text taken from an old article written in red lipstick on a mirror, this is a quote from a Nottingham suffragette that directly mentions the castle. This piece of course began as an extension of my shit stories project, the feminist text a shit story in itself, the red lipstick a deliberate choice as it historically acted as a rebellion for "respectable" women. Despite being a shit stories extension this piece will be showing at the castle after the upcoming studio exhibition, I feel unless the viewer is extremely familiar with my works and projects there may be a feeling of disconnect between the two pieces.

Alex from across the road came to my tutor and asked if anyone wanted to create a piece for the reception area in 25 stony st. Alex has previously asked for extra work to be created and shown in 25 stony st reception for events like light night and each time i have taken up the opportunity, so once again was asked to do so, which i happily said yes too. Since the revamp across the road the reception space acts as a very nice exhibition space, the wall i show on is a nice large clean wall. As mentioned in previous blog posts my plan for this piece is a large installation of mirrors, these mirrors will be written on in lipstick. Originally i thought i may write my mothers lies on the mirrors, yet when double checking with Alex all text had to be clean in nature so i thought it may be safer to go with different ways of apologising. These apologies will be both typical apologies and also insincere ones received from my mother. I am very happy to complete this piece as the method of mirrors and lipstick paired with the apologies creates a cohesive link between all the pieces i have on show currently.

Over the past few weeks i have visited different charity shops collecting the mirrors that will be used for this piece, as well as borrowing a few from my tutor and a friend. When choosing mirrors i decided to stay away from anything to modern or heavy. I was trying to avoid the gentrified hipster bistro aesthetic and stick purely to fine art installation. This piece hasn't been installed yet as I've been focusing on setting up the FMP, i went over to have everything double approved Thursday and we have planned to install on Monday.
