The Erewash museum
For our new project titled ‘structure’ we will be creating pieces of work to be exhibited in the Erewash museum in Ilkeston. To kick start our project last week we took a trip down to the museum itself to view our exhibition space and the current exhibits. Erewash isn’t really your typical museum, it’s a small place in a sad post-industrial town with the museum itself only spanning around 4 or 5 rooms but I found it to be a place filled with endless information and wonder. The artefacts this small place held weren’t particularly the most valuable of objects a museum cou have but housed so much history, the whole place wasn’t a particularly themed place like a natural history museum or an art museum but just a place housing all different peculiar bits of history a place where the history felt personal and intimate . One of my favourite pieces in the whole place was a cigarette lighter from world war 2 that was made by a soldier using an old bullet shell casing, I love this piece because it really hits home about soldiers being only human, people that are trying to survive. But the last room I entered was the one that struck inspiration within me, a room with a huge cabinet of curiosities. A cabinet of things from crystals to children’s toys blocks, handpicked bits of interest. So I found this trip to be very inspirational and important not just for sizing up the exhibition space but also giving me the ideas I needed to begin my project. All in all a successful trip.
